1. It’s National
As it says in the name an NIT is a national institution. The place may not be run like an IIT but it’s bonafide. The courses will happen on time. The exams will be clean. The students won’t get duped on fees and such things. Some of the best NITs are as good as some of the IITs in most things. You can sign up for a course at most NITs blindly.
2. The Infrastructure
It may not be Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but an NIT normally will have good infrastructure across the board. The newer ones even more so. The libraries will have books, the classrooms will be hospitable and the hostels won’t be too bad. No temporary iron sheds here like those shady private colleges that are a dime a dozen. And yes, most NITs have great computing facilities.
3. The Academics
NITs offer an array of courses and electives second only to the IITs. So your academic program will be sound. You may not get every subject you want or aspire for but still, the NITs are a good compromise to the IITs. The classes will be decently scheduled, books will be available, labs will be adequate and you should have a fairly decent faculty resource. No ad hoc cost cutting as often seen in private colleges.
4. The People
We think this is one of the strongest things going for an NIT. You will be studying with a bunch of people from every nook and corner of the country and every strata of society. This is absolutely impossible to replicate in any other institute. A wonderful opportunity to mix with and be explosed so many different cultures. This is an NIT special!
5. The Alumni
NITs produce some great alumni too. So when you’re looking for a job or funding for your startup having a good network helps. The NITs have been around for years and years. And a good alumni network is worth it’s weight in gold. And don’t forget that a lot of NIT alumni study abroad too. Always helps when you need that MS at Virigina Tech desperately.
6. The Brand
Sure it ain’t the IITs. (we get sick of saying that.) But it’s miles ahead of Popat Lal College of Technology in Vellore. The NITs are recognized in India AND abroad AND by HR people in companies.
7. The Heritage
The oldest NITs are 40+ years old. This in itself should give you a sense of security. Heritage also means recognition, infrastructure and a great alumni network with many CEOs and such like. Old, in the academic world, is gold.
8. The Value
Fantastic value for money. You get a top notch education at low to pathetically, senselessly, insanely pittance fees. You should have no trouble at all paying off your education loans.
9. The Atmosphere
The mix of people makes it a really cool place to hangout. Also you normally get the freedom to do several extra-curricular activities and some of the best college festivals are hosted by the NITs (they get good sponsorship you see). Most people from the NITs will tell you that their greatest takeaway from their course was the great atmosphere.
10. The Placements
Kickass placements. All the top names, across sectors and industries. And top class salaries. Some companies prefer NIT alumni to the IITians because apparently the NIT-ians ‘stick’. The top NITs place close to 100% without breaking into a sweat. Of course it all depends on the economy. But when things do go wrong globally it does pay to be at an NIT!
This is an excerpt fom an article that originally appeared in JAM mag.hope this will give all budding aspirants an insight into the NIT life to aid in making an informed decision

iLike
thank you aryan. so you are a design student in IITG. i am doing civil engineering in NIT silchar and have a keen interest in design…a different kind though.nice blog of yours.ill keep an eye out
pleasure.
good one
thank you…please keep coming back with your valuable comments and suggestions
great
dis wil serve as a very gud guidance to all students ..great work folk…thanx a lot …
i do hav a query …well my rank is 17239 in aieee…well seeing the last years closin ranks and using some tools dat tell me abt d second counselin dat took last yr..i can get civil in suratkal, trichy,n many more nits..also acc to my rank .nit silchar was offering almost all branches…but its not in d top 100(as far as i kno)..but seeing d past placements it seems really good…also my parents do not prefer silchar coz its in a disordered area…so plz suggest me wat to go for…my pref in branches is electronics\electrical>>mech>>civil..n also tell wat are d job prospects in chem…plz do reply..am a lot confused…also i am from up..
plz tell me more abt nit silchar ….which is d best branch dere???…also shud i prefer nits over private colleges in uptu ..i got 3019 in upsee…n ican get almost al d branches in uptu’s top private engg colleges…thank uuuu…
ok prashant.first of all congratulations on ur good result.i can very well understand ur dilemma.let me give you some statistics as that will make ur doubt clear.
NIT silchar has 300 % placements for the last five years with last year of average placement of 5.5 lakhs and highest of 12 lakhs offered by a psu and a private company.even this year despite the economic downturn, there is 200% placement with highest of 11 lakhs.(the avg is not known and also placements are still going on)
i’ll strongly suggest you to grab any seat in any NIT without hesitation.with great placements, very cordial relations among friends and an established and extensive alumni network, all NITs can provide you a platform that only IITs can supersede.and another thing my friend,NEVER judge a college by its exteriors.”all that glitters is not gold”-this is specially true of educational institutions.if ur one of those persons who needs an AC hostel and a glitzy classroom..don’t consider any NIT or even IIT.consider going to those numerous private collegs who are the “NO 1″ in india with 20% placement that they show by paying the companies.its an open secret and you know who i am referring to.
but if you want a “real” career with a reputation and standing in a society, choose NIT.you will know the advantage of a NIT brand when you join companies, want a promotion, survive a recession or want to go for further studies.not a single one of our alumni has been sacked during this recession despite thousands of job cuts.we have alumni in fortune five hundred companies and many are in a great positions.
now about “best department” and “best NIT”.the question is actually meaningless .you will know what i am saying when you study in any NIT.a
the golden rule is-”a good student will have a great career in any branch”.
still..here it is
Civil Engineering- 18 faculty.14 doctorates.splendid placement.many have comphy PSU placements.excellent atmosphere.very friendly and co-operative faculty.Lots of research and consultancy projects going on
Mechanical-16 faculty.around 8 doctorates.Best placement in NITS.good faculty.lenient academics.sucessfull alumni.
ECE-11 faculty.3 doctorates.Great alumni. Over the years some of the most fundoo students have come from this department. But academic atmosphere has a scope for improvement.
ELECTRICAL-14 faculty.5 doctorates.good placements specially core companies.qualified faculty.but you will have a horrific undergraduate life.too much academic pressure.(its true of electrical everywhere)
CSE-10 faculty. One doctorate.Average but 100% placements (considering that the toppers opt for CSE).Lacklustre academics. This is the department that probably has the most accomplished alumni network. Almost every guy who passed till 5 years back is currently in some overseas company in a good positions. But students generally are a bit dissatisfied.
all these are just indicative.just as i said. a good student will do good everywhere.
ill rank the departments for you–(reverse order)
placemnts-mecha,civil,electrical/ece,CSE
faculty strength and acdemic atmos-civil,mech,ece,cse/electrical
now you can choose for urself
and about NIT silchar not being in the 100 .i guess TIMES OF INDIA told you so.how much do you trust a mag with ur career which says SRM is the no 1 college in inda? :> …i can only smile.no wonder they say so.ITs a multi-crore business my fren.ask any seniors who are studying in NIT/IIT.and our campus is beautiful.silchar just doesn’t come into the picture.ask me if you need any more info.
good luck!
Hi
Your blog is really cool. It lights up peoples heart(like me) who failed to get into IIT. But unfortunately, I did not get a good rank in AIEEE either. I got an All India Rank of 22000. ( I am from GEN Category). I am from Uttar Pradesh. As you are a student of NIT Silchar, I would like to ask you some questions:
1. Can I get electronics is NIT Silchar in the second or third counseling? If possible could you tell me the various cutoffs of different branches at the final counseling(I checked out on the AIEEE site but most probably they were of first counseling)
2. Would you suggest any other NIT at this rank?
3. My parents are a little sceptical about sending me to a disturbed area. How is the situation there?
Thanks
thanks a lot for your compliment.and do not despair.life doeesn’t end in NIT/IIT.
1. i can’t possibly tell you if you’ll get xyz branch in any NITY.It changes every year specially with quota systems changing, its difficult for me to comment.
but, frankly, i dnt think you can get any seat in NIT silchar as there is no longer any UP quota.
2.please check the ccb website.it has more details than any one else can provide you.
3.disturbed area? :> silchar is one of the most peaceful places of north east.there has not been a single bomb blast their in past three years.maybe even before.and we have one the most scenic campuses among all NITs.more people died in mumbai in terrorists attacks then in entire north-east for last five years.this is just a simple misconception my fren.besides NIT campuses are situated in very isolated places.so you basically never have to get out of the campus.everything will be available in campus.
good luck.keep coming back
The Home State quota still exists. the state quota has been removed.
This is confusing so i’ll try to explain =
home state quota = 50% of seats in college will be filled from the same state on basis of state rank (this is still there)
state quota (this one is now removed) – earlier every state had fixed number of seats in each NIT, and those seats were filled on basis of state rank. example say NIT X may have 5 seats assigned for UP, hence only 5 people will be accepted from UP and they will be chosen as per state rank. Even if people with better all india rank (AIR) are there from other states, they will not be taken as per state quota.
i know all these subham.i got into NIT silchar when the quota system still existed.so i know those things as well as the system now.just that i can’t exctly tell if you will get some seat or not as i am not aware of the eact opening and closing ranks of different NITs.ccb website had a wealth of info.use that.
Hi
I read your blog and think that you are one of the few sensible people online, thus I would like some advice from you.
To introduce myself, I am Shubhangam, from Kolkata, WB. Got 94.6% in boards (cbse english screwed me with 78, got 100 in maths and phys, 99 in cs, 96 is chem), 4400 extended list in IITJEE, 262 in bits and a overall AIR of 6846 in AIEEE.
One thing I would want to say is that I am a computer freak, and just cannot study anything except computer science/engineering because I am very passionate regarding this field.
So, what I would like to know is which is the best college option for me though AIEEE (as the others are not going to get me anything).
From what I have researched uptill now, LNMIIT, jaipur and NIT Hamirpur seem to be my best options of getting CSE. (NIT calicut seemed to be best, but there’s no chance of that as the online counselling suggests)
The most important things I seek in my college are infrastructure, faculty and level of education (in that order). Placements aren’t the most important since I’m sure I’ll be going in for higher studies and from what I have read, the placement differences are generally of a differnce of a 5~10k here n there per annum.
So on that criteria, could you please give me some advice on how I should proceed?
Also I will be going out of town on saturday (20th) for a week to kashmir so it would be really great as you could reply today (19th) so that I can finalise my options.
Thanks in advance
Shubhangam Agrawal
i have mailed you all the details shubhangam.
hello !
grt work !
i need ur help
my AIEEE result is below-
All India Rank
Overall 14982
Category 12067
State Rank
Overall 1850
Category 1487
i am from UP… UPSEE rank 1158
can i get sum gud branch in NITs ? shud i prefer coll or branch ? and plz tel me is der any hope in NIT hamirpur wid a gud branch ? actly i m confused…i guess hamirpur is d option where i cn get sum gud brnch…courtsey- ccb openin closin rnks
plz suggest sum ideas…wat r d chances in some better NITs…
thnx !
thank you vaibhav.
1) i’ll say the same thing to you that i have said to others.CONSULT THE CCB WEBSITE! it has year-on-year statistics of the opening and closing ranks—branch-wise and NIT-wise.if anywhere you can get accurate answers it is the ccb website.awright?
2) there is nothing called a “good” branch.you will do good if you study well in any branmch
3) most students only have a faint idea of what all branches are and what they entail.so better try to gather some idea on it.placement wise all NITs have almost the same stats.so its better if you find a branch that you would like to study for the rest of your life and then go for the college.
come back if you have any more doubts.good luck! and do inform if ur admitted…
ok..thnks !
i hav one more query !
suppose i got some seat in frst round of counsellin ! den am i eligible for secnd round f counsellin…i mean for the choices above dan dat wat i got ?
i heard from someone dat only those can apply fr secnd round who havnt got any seats in frst rnd !
i saw d ccb page also…frm there i guess its not true !
so whts d reality ?
yes vaibhav.you heard it right.if you are offered a seat in first counselling, you can’t opt for second counselling.to the best of my knowledge.go through ccb website carefully….
arey its nt lik dat …evry1 is eligible for second counselin ..unless n until u get ur top choice in d first counselin….dis follows for d following counselings also…u jus need to apply for second counseling..n if dere is ne seat remaining (of ur more preferred choice) u l get dat ..but den u cant go back to d lower choice in any case…i hop it clears ur query…
@prsahant
i think u r ryt ! bcoz its writtten der –
“If a candidate gets seat allotment under all India quota and OPEN category in any round against his/her first preference in the list of choices given by him/her at the time of choice filling, the candidate is not eligible for consideration in subsequent rounds of seat allotment.”
i think that the “FIRST PREFERENCE” written over there is meant for the FIRST CHOICE , not for frst round ! i mean to say – “choice no. 1″ … ny student alloted choice no 1 will nt b eligile for secnod round.
at last .. once more i want to know…
if i got some seat in frst rnd, obviously nt the frst choice, …am i eligible for the scnd rnd for more choices above dat wat i got ?
‘Hi Iengineer’
Allow me to say, you have done a great job ‘Congrats’ here, despite the fact I have no clue of all this…
.
Just creating awareness online has given me info
.
.
My son was unable to achieve IIT, but he got to be eight thousand and twenty in aiee, 215 in westbengal
.
Aims for ECE
.
Now we were wondering, he got offer in jamshedpur nit
.
but I am telling focus on birla for ece
.
west bengal has no quota for ece i believe
.
and here i read state quota system has been removed, hence does he stand a possibility? IN ece, birla ranchi.
.
Whatever, I wish you all the best….
.
Folks like you are very much needed for our kids…
.
Bless
.
Dq
thanks a ton.i hope my effort has been successful.spread the word please!
.
anyways congrats on ur sons good performance.yes, state quota has been completely removed.so only way in is through AIR. However,i dnt think he can get in at this rank in ECE.still, its just my opinion. I haven’t seen last year’s cut-off.that will be a better guide for you.
please take care that only BIT ranchi has good reputation.Dnt fall for the numerous other extension centres they have opened everywhere.
.
And since you have got a seat in NIT jamshedpur, you can grab it with open mind. If he is dilligent in his undergraduate career,he would be as sucessful in BIT mesra as in NIT-j.
.
good luck
Hello ‘Iengineer’
Thank you so much for your prompt response, highly appreciated.
.
.
Could you help me once more please with such little time span before locking it finally
.
he has got jamshedpur and durgapur nit

Hey, U bet my sons friends have been popping in here already…word of mouth does cause ripples…
.
Much Thanks and appreciation.
Cheers!!!

Thank YOu so much for the good wishes

I don’t like to suggest anyone any particular NIT.Its an incorrect portrayal and is very unfair to the student as well as that NIT.
.
I personally abhor rankings as that make a complete mockery of the education system as well as the wisdom of upcoming students. After all i am sure you will admit that whatever i will suggest will be based on my solitary viewpoint. And i have no right or qualification to sit in judgement over the NITs(unlike what INDIA TODAY/TOI thinks).
.
NIT durgapur has good placements and i guess decent faculty.equally good in NIT jamshedpur.
However, academic atmosphere(overall) is average in NIT jamshedpur.slightly better in NIT durgapur.
But a big factor is—If you are not from a particular community(i won’t take the name.but i guess you would understand),its better to opt for NIT-J as you have options.despite being NATIONAL,all NITs have retained their regional characters till date to some extent.so i guess you understand
or maybe just flip a coin!your son will be good in both of them.i assure you…
Good Morning ‘IEngineer’
.
I absolutely agree with you that comparing and ranking is a complete mockery of mankind, as each is a unique indivisual….all have brilliant hidden qualities that is beyond ranking and judgement of any any single or a handful of constricted, brains….where one’s mind and spirit can come to a halt…the others may be beginning from there…
.
alas! we humans…have made ourselves look up to rewards and ranks…underestimating ourselves….
.
As for the other category..I give that issue an invisible eye….if living in mercy and making themselves feel they are different by demanding such categories proves they fear competition, and permit the rest of the world to go on degrading them…they have chosen this path…let them live with it till they live…Hope one day they will learn to stand up and make themselves feel they r equal and face the challenges with equality..then only they shall have the dignity they fight for….
.
.
Durgapur done!!
.
Rest last minute if they offer something better which shows above durgapur…then thats a last minute change of forces…so shall it be…if not…this is what was meant to be….the journey has not ended it has just begun….
.
.
Do please take care of yourself….
Allow me thank you once again for the moments and efforts you have provided on my behalf…
.
Blessings and best wishes from horizons far

Good Evening ‘IEngineer’

My son got his seat confirmed in durgapur today…

he had to take all the documents they asked for and pROnto…done.

So here we are towards a new destination with a horizon in the distance…

well! congratulations! hope your son will do well. And ask him to embrace the new experiences, good and bad, with a smile.i am sure there will be plenty there….
And hope you will continue to come back.i am planning to write more often from now on.also consider writing a small note on my guest book. I would appreciate
best
Good Morning ‘IEngineer’

Allow me to say…bad is more often a pathway to good…it makes you seek truth…so there is nothing good or bad in my books…

kaantei na ho tho gulab ko mehsus kaise kiya jaayei?

Life a journey between birth and death….the journey began the moment you took form…embracing all the ripples, waves, storms in the sea is the only way of reaching the other end…I see no other escape nor option…so why
not embrace it all…
.
Thank You once again for thy wishes…

I wonder where your guest book really is?

hello sir !
yesterday came the result of scnd rnd counselling…a bit “shocking” as der is no significant upgradation coz of d frendly refund rule of fee…no one has taken back his claim..IITians who wont opt r still der

i guess the condn is not going to improve till 4th round and only slidin wil play d big role dis year…coz lots f seats wil fal vacant cz of withdrw of dose goin in IITs…some people r even talkn of INTER-COLLEGE counselling :O
leavin all dat upTo CCB…i wanna noe bout d SCOPE OF MINING IN FUTURE .. though m expecting upgradation in after after sliding…bt still…sticking to the present scene ( who noes d future ) wil u plz give sum words !
i hav no issues wid d workin condns in mining…jus wanna noe abt d packages offerd nd placemnt frm d institute…
and 1thng more.. plz comment on d present counsell procedure…do u think seats wil fall vacant n i may get branches like chemical der in d institutes ?
help !
i am not sure what you are referring to by “intercollege counselling”.newaz i may remind you that inter-NIT transfers are not allowed unless in very drastic circumstances.its in the rule books.
And don’t worry you will have plenty of scope in mining engineering also.although eligibility during placement sessions for most companies might be an issue.
i am really sorry i can’t offer you much help in terms of placement figures and all.i am not very familiar with the course structure and scope of mining. But i am pretty sure its plenty.or else,if you are not interested, take some other branch in some other NIT.
good luck!
thanks
by “inter coll counsell” iwas tryin to refer to dat inter – NIT transfers…bt as u r sayin…may b its next to impossible
nywayz…i day b4 yesterday i appeared 4 reporting…nd i hv filled d second choice of “upgradation widin d allotted insti”
i hav filled civil>chem>mining…so in d comin 3rd n 4th rnd of counsell m expectin to get chem…dat too acc to last yrs cutoffs nd increase in seats dis yr
nd i wer intrsted in mining…bt i thought dat it wil b better to go 4 d oder ronds of counsell as well
hey…. although i’v nevr met u in person but its really gr8 to see such deep n inspiring opinions coming from my own institute. BTW m a 4th sem student pursuin civil at NITS…. Keep up the good work….
Thank you Zain.I am happy to know you like it..PLease visit regularly.Talk to me sometime if you knw me personally.I would appreciate
hey iengineer what a remarkable work you have put up , blessings to you from students like me who are totally confused . iam from Nepal , iam done with my 12th and iam applying to NIT or punjab engineering collge, preferably PEC because the climate suits there . i have thought of going to the US for my masters after iam done with undergraduate from india , which branch of engineering do you think is suitable for a nice career abroad after 5 years , which do you think will be in demad , at present iam thinking of mechanical engineering and then aeronautical engineering probably from the US . which NIT would be better for me if i dont get into PUNJAB engineering college in the DASA scheme . and i heard from students in NIT jaipur that mechanical is a tough branch , really tough and there are plenty who fail the semesters and are left behind . is this just a bluff or is it reality is mechanical a tuff branch , because i had heard that mechanical wasnt that tuff , i dont say iam a talented student but iam a laborious dude , i can work hard and learn quick , please help me out , i would be grateful to you all life if i could get a helpful advise from you . please reply soon . take care .
I’ll reply to you in detail after two weeks. Currently I am crushed under Mid-sem exams
Hello Sudhanshu,
You need not be “talented” to succeed in engineering. And talent is shaped through hardwork. Most “talented” people are called so only because of their hardowrk. Be motivated and focussed and you will be fine.
I can’t reply you specifically as what will be good for you. Besides take any branch you want. as long you are hardworking, you won’t have any problem. Besides mech doesn’t include(At undergraduate level) a lot of complx mathematics just like Civil engineering. If you are weak in Math, you are advised to stay away from CSE and ECE.
And lastly about your long-term goal of higher studies. I am very happy to hear about that. If you study further in your branch, its commonsense to choose a branch that will attract less competition. More Competition=Less Chances=Less scholarship. I hope I have cleared your doubt.
If your destination is research, go for areas that have just recently caught people’s imagination in India. Say in Mech, you might want to look at nanofabrication and stuff and maybe intelligent systems.
And about what is “Demand”, I’ll strongly advise you to get out of this third-world mindset where everyone goes to things in Demand. You will be more in demand and successful by avoiding the herd. That’s what I believe.
hey i engineer , thaks for your advise , it was help ful though by the time you replied i had already figured out myself what i want , i guess its important to first figure out what iam happy wiTH . the best part from the things you mentioned above is More Competition=Less Chances=Less scholarship . really a nice thought , this had struck me jst few weeks before . well now iam fixed and firm with my decisions and my life , the storm has calmed , haha , iam with a decision to pursue Civil engineering from PEC – chandigarh , and i aim for MIT in the future , structural engineering with a few years of work experience and then a happy life wid an MBA . well i engineer take care and continue helping students like me who are strangled in webs of confusion , its a good job , bye buddy . thanks alot .
I am very pleased to hear you have chosen Civil Engineering (same as me!). Try to get some research papers(Atleast have some experience in it) published during your engineering days and you can get into top univs of your choice. Stay in touch…
ohh great to know that you are from the same field that i have chosen , i will surely be in touch with you , and i will oviously be needing your advice time and again during my engineering days . take care .
Sure. Keep in touch through mail!
hey i engineer iam back again with a simpel doubt , how is Punjab engineering college , chandigarh for civil engineering ?
hi,
i got 200 in iit , 257 in aieee and 291 in bitsat…..
as the predictions go, i may get 6-7000 in iit n 4-5000 in aieee
and i’m from AP state……..please tell me what are the best options for me……..and where can i get the closing ranks of IIIT-hyd…..
hey Manabendra, are u still in NITS? i am alumni of the college and the last batch that i personally knew has passed out this year. do lemme know by dropping me an email so that i can stay in touch with my alma mater
hi! i got 11062 in aieee . can i get nit of allahabad . i have yet not decided about branches of eng . . can you pls help
pls pls reply fast
hey m back…well dis blog really helped me last year …thnx a ton to manabendra bhaiya ..m now doin ME frm nit silchar..
@shubhangi: as frm d last counselling ..my frend at nit allahabad told dat at around 11000 u l b able to get chemical,IT, n civil easily ..dis ws d scenario aftr d 3rd counselling…so besties to u…n fill the choices carefully..
@Subhangi I have said this again and again and its this: Please use the CCB website for all kinds of info on AIR and cutoffs. No person or website can give you more exhaustive details than the CCB website. It has all the data you might require including last 4-5 years statistics and cutoffs.
prashant might have cleared your doubt. I am no position(Nor can anyone else) to give you accurate info on this.
@prashant nice knowing I have been able to help. Please meet me when I am on campus. I wont be able to recognise you. So just give the reference of the blog. I am from third hostel. I like to meet like-minded people.
hi,iengineer
i am getting civil.ece,ee in nit silchar
pls tell me about the infrastucture & faculty of the above mentioned branches..
hey, ur blog’s awesome…….wanted some advice….
i want 2 take up electronics, i’m gettin elec in VIT(vellore campus) and i would get elec in maybe nit calicut, allahabad but not in trichi, warangal or surathkal… .. should i go to VIT or NIT….pls help
Ofcourse NIT C/A Chirag. Please don’t get scammed by Glitzy ads and posh buildings. A college is made by its glorious alumni, research by faculty members and students’ performance in Industry and academia. Not by Buildings and full page ads.
Also, VIT is under a 3-year deadline by MHRD. Check this link out.
http://www.orissalinks.com/archives/category/universities/bbsr-ctc-puri-area/kiit-deemed-university-bhubaneswar
I couldn’t get the link to the original source. All this hype is just money speaking. I have friends and other people there. You can trust me on this. You can take any NIT in India without hesitation before VIT. Some colleges under ANNA are a far better option if you are looking for something down south
Also, NITs are now INIs (Institution of National Importance), the same status in IITs. Ofcourse IITs are much better option than NITs.
My suggestion to you- Don’t get scammed. You deserve a good education.
@Chirag This is the original link.
http://telegraphindia.com/1100214/jsp/nation/story_12104169.jsp
Best of luck for a bright future ahead. And do let us know about your decision.
thanks a lot ….i’m reaaly confused abt this stuff
hey, 1 more thing, how’s collg of engg, pune??
and is it worth it goin 2 the new nit’s?
@Chirag Don’t Worry. Its understandable that you are confused. Please read the earlier comments on this page and you will have a fair idea of things.
Also what you do after going there is far more important than where you are. If you are not getting the established NITs, Then choose newer NITs like Agartala and Raipur. But at the end of the day, Brand name matters in the market. and just like the IITs, even the new ones, students from new NITs will also be NITians. And it can offer opportunities to you that others may not be able to. But as I said. What you do is far more important…
I can’t comment on COEP as I dnt have any friends there. But I have heard its a very good college. Please ask other sources. And please dnt follow India Today rankings or such as they will do nothing but mislead you.
good luck. Let me know if there is anything else you want help with.
hi,iengineer
i am getting civil.ece,ee in nit silchar
tell me about the infrastucture & faculty & placement of the above mentioned branches..
pls reply..
@prajakta:hi ..n first of all i congratulate u that u r gettin a seat in NIT…..its always an added advantage if u pass thru such an institute coz companies always hace an incline towards “institutes of nantional importance”…so the placement will never b a problem.
i l qoute directly from what the admin qouted me when i ws in d same dilemma ….this is what he stated abt d branches in our clg:
“Civil Engineering- 18 faculty.14 doctorates.splendid placement.many have comphy PSU placements.excellent atmosphere.very friendly and co-operative faculty.Lots of research and consultancy projects going on
Mechanical-16 faculty.around 8 doctorates.Best placement in NITS.good faculty.lenient academics.sucessfull alumni.
But students generally are a bit dissatisfied.
all these are just indicative.just as i said. a good student will do good everywhere.
ill rank the departments for you–(reverse order)
placemnts-mecha,civil,electrical/ece,CSE
faculty strength and acdemic atmos-civil,mech,ece,cse/electrical
now you can choose for urself”
i think nothing more u l need to judge abt d branches …hope it helps…:P….n about d placements..:
“NIT silchar has 300 % placements for the last five years with last year of average placement of 5.5 lakhs and highest of 12 lakhs offered by a psu and a private company.even this year despite the economic downturn, there is 200% placement with highest of 11 lakhs.(the avg is not known and also placements are still going on)”
this ws d last year scenario …fr this yrs placements ..the admin of the blog wud b able to answer abt it ..coz he must hav been in touch wid d snrs ….bt as far as i kno …
almst all d batch ws placed…
hey hi
my aieee AIR rank is 17386 and my category is OBC(NCL) my home state is Andhra Pradesh… m getting confused whether to go after branch or college can anyone help me please..
thanx prashant!!
do the nits have any scholarship program after u take admission in undergraduate courses?
@prashant Many Many thanks for explaining prajakta’s query. Are you from NITS? If yes, drop by to meet me sometime.
@prajakta Hope your doubts have been cleared.Let me know if you need more info. BTW this year’s best placemnts have been led by ECE junta in our college closely followed by Mech/Civil.
About scholarship, you will be eligible for all national Govt and state scholarships. Though like all govt schemes, they are hard to bank on. You will get bank loan without any collateral though.
Good luck!
ok.. thanx for da info ..still i cant decide between ece & eee!!! pls let me know da major subjects involved wid the streams…
@prajakta.
I dnt understand what you are referring too. In NITS, we have Electronics And Communication Engineering(ECE) and Electrical Engnieering(EE) and Electronics and Instrumentation(E&I). Don’t opt for E&I as its a very new dept(1 year old).
Though normally I refrain from making choices for the various students who drop by on this blog. But since you have narrowed down, I might just….
If your interest is in circuit branch, then take ECE.
If your interest is in non-circuit, then take Civil/Mech
@ iENGINEER
i accidentally landed into this wonderful website, and without actually interacting with u i already learnt a lot about nit silchar form ur previous post and most of them r amazing!
my aieee 2010 air is 22227, hs: andhra pradesh, cat: op
sir how are my chances of getting into nit silchar, according to my understanding of things from ur post civil and mech at silchar is good, going by last years councelling i might end up with civil in 5th round, but i would love to get mech or civil by 3rd or 4th round. do i stand a posibility ?
If no what should be my strategy to get into nit silchar? how is nit agartala, i heard logistically agartala is demanding than silchar, that is one reason for my inclination of impression on silchar, rather than agartala.
sir, how many students are there from andhra pradesh, how are the climatic condition there arent they harsh?
waiting for ur reply
@praveen I am glad to know you are considering NITS for your studies. I’ll reply you one by one.
1. I’ll not be able to tell you if you can get in at that rank or not. Please consult the CCB website. It will have last year’s results state-wise. But after the abolition of out-of-state quota in NITs, your rank might be in a touch-and-go position. You might have a shot at it though.
2. ECE is good too. But if you are willing to opt for non-circuit branches, take Mech/Civil according to your career ambitions.
3. Yes, NITA is logistically much more demanding than NITS. NITS is a (sometimes) rough 12- hour journey by Bus from Guwahati, the capital of Assam and an approx half-an-hour by flight. Also, NITA is a very new NIT( though a good 40 year old college before it). So, don’t expect very good infra and all. But placement is picking up there after they got NIT tag two years back. Keep it as a backup option after NITS. I have scant knowledge of the academic culture there.
Climactic conditions will suit you as you are from Andhra. far less heat here than at your place. Moderate heat and high humidity levels. But our college is comparatively cooler than other places in Silchar due to lush greenery on campus.
3. Lots of Andhra guys here. So do not worry. And this is a new step in your life and mixing up with people of all regions is an important part of NIT Culture. All NITs have students from all parts of India. So it shouldn’t be an issue in any way.
Good luck! Hope I have been helpful.
ok thanx…
pls tell me da procedure of branch changing once u get into an nit……..
You must have a minimum of 8.0 CPI and there must be space in other branches. lots of factors come into play. But your reasons for branch change shouldn’t be what is “HOT” in the market or looks “cool” but rather be based on your career goals and aptitude. All this you will know when you spend sometime on-campus. But all that glitters in the media and your mind right may not be gold. You will know what I mean once you start your studies.
yes i do understand..
@iENGINEER
as of now i got elec & instrumentation at vit, vellore campus…..waitin for the aieee counselling.
hey, i want 2 do a masters later so the placements dont matter much to me….so could u please tell me which nit’s are best known for their electronics dept and where does vit’s elec dept stand in comparision with them??
@Chirag If you are looking for Masters abroad, you will need good recommendations and lots of research. You can do your B.Tech from VIT but I have pointed out the pitfalls to you earlier. No research is going on in VIT. That I can assure you. WHich definitely means that recos won’t be of much use. You will have to spend summers at IITs or some research institutions. And the summer abroad programs won’t be of any value to your CV unless its fully funded by the invitee institution.
For a good masters from a very good school, you will need research within your semesters. Summers are too short to get any productive work done. NITs are best bet for you in that case.
Even if you are going for masters, a degree from an NIT will hold you in good stead. All NITs have extensive alumni network build over decades of hardwork. Many NItians have gone on to become CEOs and stuff. Always helps when you need some help in corporate life.
A good student environment is very very important for student. But, VIT is giving out most of its seats as payment seats for hefty donations. Which is not exactly a way to attract the best brains. I am sure you understand that.
There’s no canned formula. Visit any NIT and talk toa few students. Visit VIT and talk to some random students. Make your choice then.
Hi,
i wanted to know which NIT wud be a better choice 4 CSE,EC or MECH…..
i’ve 8000+ rank in eee…..
pls suggest accordingly….
@iENGINEER
@iENGINEER
i hav taken a seat at vit just for the sake of it…..waiting for the aieee counselling…..hopefully i’ll get into one of the old nit’s……just wanted 2 ask u that which nit’s are known for their electronics dept??
I wanna congratulate u 4 ur xtreme practice of creating awarenes n providing sufficient info 2 al aspirants!!!
doing suprb job……..!!!!!!!
with loads of hapines n courage ………

@Sweta Thank you so much! I appreciate you dropping by. Unfortunately, will be closing this blog next month though. Only reason for not closing now is the steady flow of students who keep coming to this particular post. And I am always here to help anyone who wants it.
Will be blogging here after closing this one.
http://msaharia.wordpress.com/
Hope to see you there!
@Sweta
What are those characters by the way? I have been staring at it for ten minutes and every time I think I get it, I see something else
Hello iengineer,
I am getting AIR 8415 in AIEEE-2010.
And wud be filling the choices is a few days(~till 18th june)
Actually ,I love robotics and related branches.
coz i am interested in it a lot since childhood.
I wonder which branches can cater to my dreams!
can civil or chemical or metallurgy???????
(coz i am getting these in IT-BHU)
(IITJEE rank 4860 gen.)
shud I take these in BHU or some NIT with my dream branch like ECE???
Plz reply fast..
also tell which other branches are related to a robotics kind of thing…

You have a good rank. I hope you will get a branch of your choice and I have had your query from many students before. Let me reply to you in detail because there seems to be a lot of confusion (Understandably) with this “robot thing”.
Most students have little or no knowledge about what robotics is when they apply.(Just like most students want to be programmers because they are good with computers even if in reality its a different field with LOADS of mathematics and nothing to do with how many softwares you know). If your interest comes from Junkyard Wars then you have a long way to go.
Making a manual robot that can pick up trash or navigate its way around a zigsaw isn’t really robotics per se. Its more like a hobby. You dnt need any engineering background for that. Just an inquisitive mind and lot of free time (and Money!).
Young students usually confuse all this robotics which is a different field involving a lot of mechanics and computing, applications of Artificial Neural Networks and other processing systems and such. Its a fairly boring field (with lots of mathematics). Not the type shown in movies or you see in science fairs. I am currently working on Artificial Neural Networks but my work is to develop forecasting models for river flow (I am in Civil Engineering). However nothing I do has anything to do with robotics. So you can understand that you can diversify into many fields.
http://www.robotbooks.com/neural-networks.htm
If you want to make fundamental contributions to Robotics, you should go for intelligent computing and such. Check this lab in IITK.
http://home.iitk.ac.in/~lbehera/isl.html
Even people who have made great contributions may never have built a robot. Its a much hyped field, lot of promise and loads of misconceptions.
If you want more info about robotics and all, talk to my friend here who can tell you more than me. Refer to this blog
http://www.facebook.com/restablecer
sorry!
I posted it twice in exitement!!!
No problem. And yes! I dint mention in my last reply. If you still have the motivation to go for it and think that you have a fair idea of the field, you can take Mech/ECE/CSE. You will have ample opportunity to work in all three branches. But just a reminder, its one of the most misunderstood fields of Engineering. So be prepared to get LOTS of surprises.
And ,
plz tell that which NIT has the best robotics club
(u may give a list of NIT’s in an order of their robotics clubs)
I cant give you any such list as I don’t have friends in all NITs. And I don’t understand what you mean by “in order”.
Get into any of the three branches I told you. Work on problems with faculty members. Work in IITs/IISc in summers. Get some papers published. Go for M.Tech/MS/PhD in Robotics/Intelligent Computing/many other specialisations. And you can think about making some fundamental contributions to this field.
Making a robot won’t really add a lot of weight to your CV. You can enquire any other student in NIT/IIT. Its a great ( but expensive) hobby to have though. But won’t land you a job or a seat for higher studies.
Check some of these links. You may not understand anything of these papers, but will give an insight into what it actually entails

Most current work is happening in developing efficient algorithms and New materials design
Thank U very very very very very very very much sir…
U wud not believe that u r the first(and only) person who has responded to my queries in such detail.
Earlier I was thinking that no one wud reply..
But an instant comment from u changed my thoughts and for a second I couldnt believe my eyes that there is someone listening….
coz I had posted the same query on many sites, asked to many didi’s and bhaiyas(coz they themselves are engineers and I thought that they wud clear my doubts);
but, sans any result.
But, this answer by u has opened my eyes and now I will think in a more matured way.
Actually, I was disillusioned by all those shows on Discovery and Nat Geo, who showcase abt all this in a very simple manner .So its natural for a young kid like me to develop such misconceptions.
Now I have got a new vision and will not confuse between career and hobby.(Actually one of my bhaiyas told that “Find a job U love to do , and U will never have to work a day in your life”). But then,, I was totally ignoring scope factor and did not go into the complexiteis…
I will surely tell u that what college and branch I am finally getting .
Once again…..Thanx a lot…..
You are unnecessarily effusive in your praise my friend. (Buy me a Coffee if we meet someday!). I am most happy to help you. However, do make sure you help other Juniors when you reach my stage.
Your misconceptions are very much understandable at your stage. I had the same (just like everyone else). But I hope you will take a more matured view of life and career now. Don’t worry about scope. All Engineering branches have more than enough scope if you have the guts to rough it out.
Infact my suggestion to you-Go for branches that are usually less in “demand”. Because you will have a much easier time making a name for yourself(as well as making money!) where there is no rush.
Good luck!
@iengineer
Hi,
i wanted to know which NIT’s wud b better choice for mech.,CS nd ECE…
my rank is 8625….
pls reply at the earnest.
thank u….
@iENGINEER
u were helping me quite gracefully, and reflecting ur advice my indicative seat matrix gave me metullrgy in nit raipur (till now,) sir now i am confused to choose
nit silchar ( civil, mech this include the same branches in nit sringar, agartala) vs nit raipur (metullurgy) vs IIIT Gwalior(other IIIT’s as well) vs nit warangal ( biotechnology in nit roulkela, durgapur, etc)
waiting for ur reply ……………
Go for NIT Silchar Civil/Mech if you want to work in core over srinagar/agartala since you have the chance.
Metallurgy is a good branch but I am not sure of how the branch is in NIT Raipur. So no comments.
You can choose NITs over IIIT Gwalior.
NIT warangal is a wonderful place to study but then again, most people may not have a flair for Biotech. If you do the choose Warangal over durgapur.
Can’t give you one choice. It depends on your aotitude and what you want from life.
@iENGINEER
i wanted to know which branch is better at NIT tiruchi: Instrumentation & Control Engineering
Civil Engineering
Chemical Engineering \ Technology
my rank in aieee is 4229 please tell me how my preference list should be…
Please read the blog and the comments. You will know that I don’t reply to this kind of requests. You should take a branch that suits your aptitude and not be what is ‘hot’ in the market.
There’s plenty of scope in all these branches. And NITT is perfectly good place to study. However I can give you details about the branches so that you can make an informed decision:
I&C : Its more of a subset of ECE and Electrical Engg. Specialised branch. So obviously scope will be limited than other branches.(In terms of specialisations, Not job). But I have heard excellent placements in NITT and I do have friends studying here. Good choice if you want a circuit branch but cant get ECE/ETC.
Civil: Oldest branch of Engg. If you seek a higher degree after B.Tech, this could be a smart choice. You will be spoiled for specialisations. I have no idea how this branch is in NITT. But good placements and good choice if you are looking to be in Core)
Chemical: Excellent placements in this branch. Lots of PSU/Oil jobs here. No idea about how it is in NITT.
Hey …. BTW this is a really good thing you people are doing …Guiding us !! …. could you clear my doubt ?? I am from AP and my state rank is 7500 and I checked the opening rank and C.R for 2009 at ccb.nic.in for NIT Warangal ( which happns to be in my state ) and the opening rank for the second round of counselling is somewhere around for home state quota 7k – 8k+ …. I dont understand if its true because how can there be that many seats in a single branch ??!!! if it is true please tell me if the OR and CR would be similar in 2010 ???
It says rank. Not seats. Many top AIEEE students might have got into IITs or chosen different NITs. Most NITs have a branch strength ranging from 50-100. Hardly ever more than that.
Best of Luck!
@Iengineer
hi….ds is gooood………..heres actly sum1 replyin 2 r doubts…………wantd 2 ask…………wch 1 is betr 4 mechanical…..NIT warngal or surathkal…….or is it lyk both r almst d same……….???
one more thn is how is meachanical in calicut s compared2 surathkal, allahbad, bhopal……
@Bhaswati Thank you for your compliments. Always happy to help. And about your query, its difficult for me to say about some of the NITs as I don’t have friends there. Whatever information I give here is authentic and verified through actual students studying here. So I’ll refrain from commenting on your query. Try the Orkut/Facebook community of those colleges or alumni of that college. Most people would be happy to help.
Mechanical is an excellent choice given the current economic scenario. (Though you may end up as the only girl in class after 1st year!). To be safe, you can choose NITW or NITSkl. And its more dependent on what you do after going there.
hey i engineer! its really great to see someone helping young minds from heart! i got your reference from prashant bhaiya, a student of your very own college!
sir, i got 22891 AIR and i am from chandigarh..so i don’t hope to get any nit here near chandigarh!
i really need your help regarding some issues..
i am really confused which branch i should be taking. i don’t even know what my actual interest is.. you know i never thought of it.. we just prepare of jee/aieee and aspire to be an engineer but many of us don’t know which branch to opt.. some choose cse or ece just because it’s preference by the rest of the people..you may be thinking of me as an complete idiot..but i think its just the fact!i mean when you ask anyone about his/her aim in 12th or 11th or before grade , he answers i wanna be an engineer.. i now think ,there actual answer should be i wanna be an iitian /nitian/bitsian or whatever.. what i m trying to say is that many of us don’t even understand anything about the branch we take.. we just take because of the fact that we are gonna be in iit or nit! but i want to take branch that i can be comfortable with for the rest of my life.
please help me if you do understand what m trying to say
@akshit Don’t worry so much. You are not the first one to not have a clue about your aims. And you definitely won’t be the last.
Suggestion#1 Read all the comments on this post as most visitors (and little from my side) have added information that could be valuable in shaping your interests. Specially where the different branches are explained.
Suggestion#2 Make a list of all the branches (Main 5 or 6 branches) and see or ask around what kind of jobs are available in each branch. Jot it down in a paper. It won’t take you more than a few minutes. See what appeals to you.
Suggestion#3 DON’T worry about scope. And don’t listen to your neighbors. More often than not, they will misguide you, even if unintentionally. There’s MORE than enough scope in EVERY branch of Engineering, IF you have the motivation to learn and excel. You can take my word for it. Most people form their opinions by where the place is or where the job is. But if you have a broader outlook, you will discover plenty of opportunities for further studies/Job
Tip#1 There are two kinds of branches in Engineering (mainly)-Circuit(Electronics/Electrical) and non-Circuit(Mechanical/Civil). Naming is for obvious reasons. You can go around asking people in this format.
Let me know if you need more info. Good Luck!
thanks for giving such a wonderful suggestions!
as far by now my options were cse>eee>mech>ece>civ.instru.. i know its stupid one circuit branch followed by non ciircuit branch.. honestli don’t have much interest in electronics or elecricity.. i rather loved mechanics in 11th grade! electronics never seemed natural ..but mechanics once you understand basics , problems always seems easy!
im talked to my uncle about all branches who done his btech from thapar in his time!! he said you would havve field work jobs after mechanical and civil.. but you would rather have a easy job after cse or eee.. he suggested eee by the way! and he also said people after ece rather go in netwoking or telecommunication sectors..
my very first choice was mechanical but my father refused me not to.. he says mech engg doesnot have high salaries in their sector.. i don’t beleive it..
@akshit Your well-wishers couldn’t be further from truth. I can cite an example from my NIT. Since last five years, every year Mech and Civil has got the packages with highest salaries. Mech is a little ahead of Civil in NITS.Core companies will always pay you more. But yes, the highest paid jobs are in the Product development sector for CSE and in some cases ECE (Companies like Adobe, Google, Microsoft etc). Please don’t confuse it with software companies like TCS/IBM. They pay very very less. And that’s why there is this common misconception that “computer wale” jobs are best. Follow your heart. It seems you are more suited for Mech or Civil. Since you love Mechanics, you will love studying these branches. And about Field job, you will actually like it.(Two years max). And you won’t have to do it if you get higher degrees(M.Tech/MS/MBA/PhD.
So choose wisely. Your uncle and father passed in a different era. Things aren’t so simple and straightforward anymore. Hope you will follow your heart.
good Luck!
I have to add one thing as it might confuse people. TCS/IBM are good companies to work for but they don’t pay sky-high salaries like you read in papers. They comparable to what a Mech/Civil grad would get in core.
Hope it is clear now.
okay ..now i am sure that i would take the branch which is gonna suit me the best! m not gonna listen to my parents or uncles! it is really great getting knowledge from you!
i i also found a site aglakadam.com from where they can tell you which branch suits your personality .. its called pychometric test.. something like that.. based on your personality and aptitude.. do you think i should go for it?
can you provide me some where i can get some insight about every branch qand kind of jobs we can have in a particular branch.. and also specialzations we can do after a particular branch!!!
I am glad to hear I have been of help. No way for me to tell if that psychometric test can help you. Take it if you want. Its free afterall. But don’t regard it as Gospel.
Let me see if I can find something that can get you complete info on all kinds of specializations. Check any IIT’s branch website. It will have more info than you will require. Its too much work for me to compile everything for you as I am currently very busy. If even after that you need info about any particular branch, then let me know. I’ll compile the links. Step#1 Open the branch websites of IITs. IITB, IITG, IITK, IITM has the best websites.
okay! what do you think about new nit’s? do you thing i shuld fill nit’s like delhi, goa before old nit’s which are constantly placed last in rankings because classes of these new nit’s are gonna be held in nit’s like warangal and surathkal ?will these new nit’s placements with their mentor nit’s?
Just like the new IITs, new NITs will need a lot of time(Min 5 years) to become a full-fledged college. Just because you will be doing classes in Host NIT, Don’t make the mistake of thinking that you will enjoying or will be governed by the same set of rules or perks. (Eg. NIT Nagaland will be doing classes in NIT Silchar this year but won’t have same facilities). You will NOT be allowed to take part in placement process of host NIT and will have separate placement process. And you will be doing classes in your new campus from next year. This is a temporary arrangement for one year only.
Don’t fill new NITs before old one’s. You will need the help of Alumni in placements/further studies and that can happen only in old NITs.
And I am telling you again. Please DON’T go by rankings. as they are made by foolish people for foolish people. Just an eg.-Have you visited NIT Srinagar? Its one of the most beautiful NITs and very good placements in most Depts. Check the placements of NIT Silchar.(Which is one of the best even in the times of recession http://www.trainingandplacementnitsilchar.net/)
So don’t get sucked in by cheap publicity hoopla and NO NIT fudges their placement records unlike the myriad dubious colleges. These rankings are made by people in Armchairs who have no idea about the state of NITs. Choose wisely.
thank you for replying/.m surely gonna fill them after old nit’s
@akshit
I will suggest u to go to IT-BHU website and browse for the department abt which u need information. there u will find detailed syllabii of all branches(some give pdf files)….
I did the same…
Try it, it really worked.
stupid question.. thapar or nit silchar? thapar is quite expensive 3lpa .. including everything.. i want to study in nit .. is there any direct flight from chandigarh to silchar?lol
Thapar is one of the few colleges that I would recommend. Its a good college. But as you said, very expensive. So most students dnt go for it. NITs wnt have more than 40k fees. Its upon you. The only three branches I would recommend in NITS are Mech, Civil and ECE. As far as Cost v/s returns ratio, NITs would win simply because you will still be spending only 3L for an education than 15L in Thapar. best return for money.
Check some website. There is direct flight from Kolkata and Guwahati. Don’t be so touchy about all this. 90% of NITs will be located in remote places. Bhopal, Surathkal, warangal, durgapur etc. Only NIT Jaipur is in the middle of a city, as far as I know. Cant help. Its a sacrifice you have to make. And trust me, you wnt regret it. Adaptability is key in both your study and professional life.
If its a big issue, choose some NIT nearer to your state.
thank rahul.. m gonna check it out
BUT I AM FROM CHANDIGARH.. I WON’T GET NIT HAMIR OF JALA AT 22891.. CAN I GET CIVIL OR MECH THERE?
YEA I DON’T WANT to spend 15l on instumentation of thapar.. i wud be getting instrumentation at most! i rather take cse mechanical or civil .. hey if i get civil in silchar or anywhere can i be touch with you? can i get civil there at this rank?
i heard that you even helped prashant last year..
how should i fill them in my preference list nit silchar, nit patna, nit raipur nit srinagar nit jamshedpur?
Ofcourse! We definitely can be in touch. And all your seniors would be happy to help you. No point in taking Instrumentation in Thapar then.
You can choose NIT Silchar, NIT Jamshedpur out of them. Raipur is a new NIT and you may not prefer Patna. Also, you may not want to go to NIT Srinagar. Though, Civil is good there I have heard. I dnt know about the placement and everything in NIT Jamshedpur even though I have frens there.
About you getting NITS, I cant comment. Please check CCB website. I’ll advise you to choose NITS over Jalandhar though Hamirpur you can take if you are getting. Last year, due to economic scenario, Mech and Civil ended very early in NITS(The CCB website may not reflect this as many students may not join and those seats are offered as dropout seats). I think you will get in Dropout category. Use CCB.
okay! civil ended at 24k after 5th round on ccb counselling.. is that data correct?
okay so m gonna fill hamirpur>jalandhar(just because its near) >silchar>jamshedpur>patna>agartala>raipur>delhi>goa>uttarkhand>pondicherry>sikkim>manipal >mizoram>nagaland./.what say?
Ya, looks good. It might be touch and go between silchar and jamshedpur. After Raipur, order won’t matter much becuase all will start at the same level.
Good luck! And do let us know the good news.
aren’t seats increased this year for general category?
Are the opening and closing ranks displayed on ccb.nic.in the state ranks or the AIRs ?? (In case of Home State quota I mean )
@krissh ! if you institute wise openind and closing rank they display OP GENERAL and HS general.former is for outside state category and latter is home stae general! both are given in AIR(Overall)
@Iengineer, could you please tell me should i fill BIT patna after all nit’s ,even the new ones? where should i fill IIIM gwalior, iiitdm jabalpur, iiitdm kancheepuramm please state the order sir!
@akshit BIT Mesra is an excellent institute. However, BIT patna is just serving as an extension centre and is yet to become very reputed. You can definitely choose the old NITs before BIT Patna. About the new ones, its really your choice. My suggestion is you go for the place. If you don’t want to live in geographically remote place like Nagaland, take BIT Patna. There isn’t really much of a choice there.
About IIIM and IIITDM, fill them after NITs.
in nit silchar placement website i could see da term (dream job) …. pls let me know abt it
Dream Jobs are usually the best jobs that are offered on-campus decided by many factors like Package offered, Reputation of the company etc. Usually the packages of dream jobs range from 5L-11L.
Once you get a dream job, you are restricted from taking any more jobs on campus. All the regulations are decided by Training and Placement Team, NITS
are you sure sir? i mean iitdm kanchipur has nw ways of teaching engineering and there each branch is mixture of several.. check thios out.. pls reply asap.. locking is 5pm ..
i mean after cse of srinaggar agartala?? pls tell seriously
IIITD&M Kancheepuram, a design and manufacturing centre of excellence
established by Government of India offers a first of its kind 4 year B.Tech
Computer Engineering programme in India. The innovative curriculum of
Computer Engineering programme is a result of concerted efforts of faculty of
the Institute, academicians from IITs and experts from the Industry and is
based on ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) recommendations. In line
with the vision of the institute to produce high quality design and
manufacturing engineers in core branches of engineering, the novel curriculum
is an amalgamation of Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics
Engineering. The Computer Engineering graduates would be equipped with
skills and knowledge that can help in efficient hardware software interaction
and intelligent product design and development. The experiential learning
approach that will be adopted by the Institute and broad skills gained in both
hardware and software will enable our graduates to get employed in automotive,
medical, textile, chemical, and other basically nonelectrical industries as well as
in computers, electronics, communication, power and other electrical and
electronics Industries. Students can also pursue higher education and research
in Computer Engineering or Engineering Management.
@Akshit I replied that way because i have never heard of IITDM before. It is a very new institute that looks to me is catering directly to market demand. Its very hard for anyone to tell what will be the quality of the institute after 4 years and what will be its status in the market. You may choose IITDM over NIT Agartala but, to be safe, choose NIT Srinagar over IITDM. many of these new institutes (including IISERs and IASST) are suffering from severe faulty crunch. In NIT Srinagar, that won’t be a problem and it has a proven track record of the past.
Please use my advice only to guide you and choose using your own judgement. And you have ambition for higher studies, say MS, M.Tech, PhD, then you will be better off with NIT Srinagar. You can always specialise after your B.tech. Too much specialisation (Like Biomedical, Instrumentation, Mechatronics etc) hurts your long-term career prospects since there is a glass-ceiling attached to them. Even though in the short-term you may end up with a better-paying job by a small difference.
The new curriculum has to stand the test of time. But you are willing to take some risk and confident about your abilities and career goals, nothing should stop you.
very reputed or highly paid job i guess
sir how is E&I in nit silchar? does it come under electronics?plz reply …
Its a very new department opened last year. Many new faculty members have been recruited this year. But no idea how that dept. will turn out to be. Please take any other dept. in NITS if available. Keep it at as your last resort.
ok thanks….i hv been alloted dis seat in 1st round..so if i dnt get upgradation den i hv to take it…so..does it come under electronics dpt?
Somewhat yes. It doesn’t have its own labs and facilities as of now. If you get any other Dept., please consider switching. Last year it had a strength of 30 students and they haven’t shown great performance last year. Take ECE, CSE, Mech, Civil or Electrical.
Good Luck!
sir,my AIR-15598 state rank(delhi)-1487
i m getting nit srinagar (civil).shld i take it…placement there last year were 58%.
probably i will go for other round of counsellings…and hope that i get some other nits of good ranking
http://www.inspirenignite.com/nit-ranking-2010/
and how are the dual courses offered in nit rourkela..plz reply
hi……
my AIR-15598 from delhi
state rank-1487
i m getting civil in nit srinagar in 1st counselling,,should i take it..
last year there were only 58% in nit srinagar so i m very scared…
moreover what do you i can get in othe round of counselling…
and how are the dual courses in nit rourkela
Please take it without hesitation. And these “Rankings” are made by fools and for fools. Please don’t trust them. And what source is your 58% placement statistic from? Besides, Last year was very bad due to economic recession(though my NIT registered 100%) so don’t rely on last year’s statistic only. Please use your own brain in deciding and don’t go by these rankings. NIT Srinagar is a perfectly good NIT to study
@atul ….dont worry …see what happens in d next counselling rounds …m sure dat u l hav a saet ur choice …1st counselling is almst fake …actually d later counselling show u d right picture ,as u might b aware of d fact that iit rankers also have out in thier seats in ccb counselling,so let them withdraw dere seat frm here … n den u l see d real counselling…all d best..
@iENGINEER-thnx for your superb advice…..and that stats is from nit srinagar site only…u are doin a great job for students like us…may you be happy always
…
@prashant-ya thats what i exactly thought..thnx yaar so much for your support…lets wait and see
and yes what about dual courses….
@Atul Always a pleasure
Anyways dual courses are good courses where you will get both B.Tech and M.Tech after 5 years. Job wise I doubt if this will give you any extra edge, specially in private comapanies. In PSUs, you will be eligible for a slightly higher pay band.
Ofcourse it is much better if you do your masters from an IIT or a good university abroad. But being in a dual degree will give you certain advantages like saving one year of your academic life (very huge benefit) and you may directly apply to PhD programs abroad and your chances of getting a scholarship increases manifold, specially since you will have ample time during these 5 years to do a little research.
Take it only if that department of that NIT is good. Ask around.
Good luck!
@atul
And this placement statistic hides lots of things as it includes people who are not eligible for jobs(students with running backlogs, disciplinary action etc) even though the actual percentage will be far higher.
e.g If you look at the placement statistic for NIT Silchar for this year, it will show as 90% I think. But the actual percentage is around 250% as many students get more than two jobs.(About a half of the whole college). Also , off-campus jobs are not counted in this statistic. As an NITian you will get preference in off-campus jobs.
hmmmm very true about what you said about placement….
and these courses are from nit rourkela..do you have idea how are they???
moreover counselling of aieee forces u to take whatever thing u get…like now i m gettin nit srinagar (civil) ,now if in further round of counselling if i get a higher preference choice(which contains dual courses) i cannot go back to nit srinagar(civil).so this is risk that i will have to take if i have to go for my higher preference choices……
NIT Rourkela is a very good NIT and you can take it. But all depts. are not equally reputed. I have no friends there. So try to get hold of some student of that place and ask him about that dept. If you like Civil Engineering , then don’t make the switch. Depends on what you want. Read the previous comments if you want help with the diff branches.
Yes, the VIT thing was supposed to be a joke. They are scamming people like anything. They admit guys with <50% by taking donations and dare to talk about NITs. Perfct example of marketing blinding the world.
and one more thing …the popat lal institute of technology in vellore..u refer to means vit na…haahahahahha..nice 1
Hello iEngineer! My AIEEE Rank is 30241. I got Mining Engg. at NIT Raipur in the first round(Home State quota). I have selected Option 2(consider choices having higher preference than mining at NIT Raipur only in subsiquent rounds). What u think of NIT Raipur? Is it good? What about placements?
Not much can be said about NIT Raipur because it has been converted to an NIT very recently, even though its an old college. But I am sure its a good place to study. Since its in your home state, please visit the campus and talk to the seniors there and ask their opinions.
NIT Raipur was previously College of Mining & Metallurgy estd in 1956. So Mining is probably very good there since it has a history of excellence. I am not sure about other branches.
If you are not sure, take some of the older NITs which were previously RECs (except NIT agartala and NIT raipur and the new NITs of this year, all NITs are more than 30 years old). I may have missed some facts there though.
Good luck!
hy bro.. i know m asking a lot of stupid questions..
i found this article.. i really liked it..it is ti help you decide the branch best for you.. i m still alitlle doubtful about how an article can decide! i mean one’s capabilities are beyond some article! but still i wud like you to see that article and tell me if its worth so that i can make up my mind and also help my confused friends
http://www.lakshyaiit.com/section.php?sid=23
VIT THING IS A LOT FUNNY AND SO IS SRM
i am a lot confused bro..i even wonder if engg is my cup of tea! please help me/ can you ask some questions to figure out?
is it compulsory to stay in hostel in nit? do dey hv single seater room or only double seater room???
Yes. Even if you don’t stay you will have to pay the fees. Rooms are single and double seater for freshers.(Earlier they were triple seaters). Most NITs have triple seaters still for freshers. But you are not allowed to choose. Choice is done randomly.
Living in an NIT will teach you one thing that no incoming guy has but is a must for success- Adjustment.
hello sir.. i did a litlle surfing on mechanical and civil engineering. found out what we’ll have to study and what are the areas of specialisation and about the job prospects! but i still have one question.. i read that work of a mechanical engineering vary from 9-5 in AC office to field work in remote areas. i wanted to know what are the areas in mechnical engineering for us to have these white collor jobs? i mean the desk work! i know that in civil desk work mainly includes designing and surveying(offsite through satellite imaging!)
@aKSHIT I read the Lakshya article and its a good point to start but has many accuracies.
1. Civil Engineers are not involved in Surveying even though they have to study it. Its don’t by surveyors (Its a trade in ITI). Designing is a big part of CE. However you have just dwelled on 1/5th of the opportunities in Civil ENgg. As you already know, its the branch with most number of Specialisations. You can specialise in Transportation Engg(The most booming field curently), Water Resources engineering, coastal engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, hydraulic engineering, construction engineering, Environmental Engg.(Booming currently) etc etc. There are dozens more.
You can go for GIS, Remote Sensing, Earth Systems modelling, Climate modelling and many other fields also. I am giving you some links that will give you some idea.

There are simply no dearth of jobs if you are willing to work hard and specialise in a particular field.
@akshit About your queries regarding jobs. Let me put this very frankly. You are too young right now to understand what are the different job profiles and nobody can make you understand that. Once you are on-campus you will learn through experience and observation.
You are also at a stage where you should be more concerned with learning than jobs. There is no dearth of jobs (Trust me!) for students willing to work hard.
If you are thinking that an AC “white collar” job can give you satisfaction with your life, please ask people woking in IT companies (specially new recruits) why they are unhappy. Ofcourse there are enough off-site jobs in both CIvil Engg and Mechanical Engg. and I am sure you will get one too. But please concern yourself with the scholarly part of your academic life rather than the end result.
Taking to engineering only because you want a “white-collar” job is not a road that leads to success in long-term.
Good Luck!
@iENGINEER i got ece in nit durgapur in 1st councelling…please tell me about faculty, campus life and placements there…
@vamsi Congratulations!! Placements are almost 100% in all NITs this year, exept perhaps NIT Agartala. But that’s because its a very new NIT. So dnt worry about that. Besides, one of my frens who studied there got placed and graduated this year from Electronics.
For faculty members, you have to enquire some student of that branch in NITDgp.
Campus life is more or less is same in all NITs since same kind of crowd is present. You will meet students from every state in India. That is assured. But you might have a little problem of regionalism in NITDgp. (But that’s true of all colleges in India including IITs).
Good luck!
keep us posted!
Great work sir .myself@Nit srinagar. Branch civil. Wish to interact with u abt the branch m in 2 sem. Catch u soon .as major’s from 2morrow
@Rahul Sure. I love to talk about my branch. We can talk in my new blog. I’ll start posting there from next month. I want to keep this space for the incoming students. Meanwhile, if you want to talk, you can always mail me. I’ll try my best to reply fast.
Good luck for your majors!

hey i m really impressed by ur blog.. the way u reply to all queries is commendable indeed.. i myself got into nit hamirpur ( cse) .. i did have a few reservations but reading ur blog has really helped.. gr8 job.. like a few students even i was confused about robotics . i thought it was a part of engg.. but thx for ur guidance. wishing u all the luck n success.. carry on the gud work
Hello sir,
I hav got chem at nit raipur……and i m also getting EEE at manipal………….
I would u rate nit raipur in comparison to manipal considering dat nit raipur is a fairly new nit…..
Also i want to know about d scope nd placements of chemical branch in nit raipur.
Plz reply soon…
sir, i have got cs in nit raipur, and cs in mit pune, iam really confused , what to opt for, i sometimes think of exposure in pune iwill get, but then think whether mit pune really good, are packages from there greater than nit raipur, please help me
Please take CS in NITR without hesitation. Engineering isn’t management or fashion studies. Exposure is got in engineering by Internships/Projects and an NIT seat will help when you want to work in a good R&D lab somewhere. You don’t need to be in a “modern” place for that. And its the digital age. You can be in the farthest part of the planet and still be well-connected. I have friends studying in MIT Pune (Its an abomination that I have to use the word MIT for them) and they aren’t really top-notch (Infact my friends barely have 50% in 12th) . its a good college is you haven’t been accepted in IITs/NITs/other good colleges.
But definitely NITR over MIT Pune anyday.
hello ienginer bhaiya…
thank you for all your help , i got civil in nit silchar and i am surely going there despite strong objections from my mom . actually i am from u p and she is does not want me to go to a place so far away . anyways thanks again ……
Welcome to NIT Silchar Civil engineering dept. Hopefully you will focus and achieve a lot in your life here. c u soon!
